Do not knock campaign

This page is for:
Consumer

If you do not wish to deal with uninvited door to door sellers you should display a Do Not Knock sticker on your front door or near the doorbell.

Donations to charity, where no sale is involved, are not unsolicited consumer agreements. This includes donations received by a third party or contractor on the charity’s behalf.

The creation of a WA sticker follows a Federal Court ruling which confirmed you do not need to meet a door-to-door salesperson face-to-face to ask them to leave your house. Details of the outcome can be found on the ACCC website.

Laws about unsolicited marketing

Under the Australian Consumer Law you have certain protections when you agree to buy something from a seller who uses unsolicited marketing approaches (by door to door or telemarketing). One of the key protections is a cooling-off period of 10 business days during which you can reconsider the purchase.

During the cooling-off period, the supplier must not provide any services; any goods priced over $500, or accept any payment. This does not apply to sales for the supply of electricity or gas to premises not already connected to such services.

The law gives you extra protections and rights when you buy goods and services from a door-to-door salesperson. For example, salespeople must leave immediately when asked to by the person who lives in the property or the consumer they are negotiating with on the doorstep.

‘Thanks, but no thanks’ videos

The ACCC has developed a series of videos on how to say no when dealing with a door to door salesperson. The videos cover pressure, inducement and cooling off rights.
